A Historic Homecoming: Bank Independent Stadium Opens at UNA

Some projects are measured in square feet, seats, and schedules. Others are measured in moments. This weekend, Bank Independent Stadium came to life at the University of North Alabama.

Following Friday evening’s ribbon-cutting, Saturday marked a historic milestone as the Lions took the field at Bobby Wallace Field at Bank Independent Stadium. For the first time, generations of UNA students, alumni, and fans gathered in the University’s new on-campus home for football.

And the energy was incredible.

Members of the Davis team were there to experience opening weekend alongside the UNA community. After years of planning, designing, and watching the stadium take shape, seeing it filled with nearly 12,000 people was something entirely different.

From tailgating along The Pines and the Lion Walk to a packed stadium at kickoff, the campus felt alive. Students, alumni and fans filled the stands, gathered along the concourse and celebrated a moment that had been decades in the making.

The Lions made sure the first game was memorable, too, defeating Alcorn State 38–20 in front of a sellout crowd.

A Vision Decades in the Making

The idea of an on-campus stadium at UNA dates back nearly 50 years. Bank Independent Stadium transforms that long-held vision into a new center of activity on campus, one designed not only for athletics, but for connection.

The multipurpose facility creates a new home for UNA Athletics while bringing football, baseball, and soccer together within the heart of campus. More than a collection of fields and seats, the stadium was envisioned as a place where students, alumni, and the greater Florence community could gather and create traditions for generations to come. Opening weekend offered the first glimpse of exactly that.

There is also something especially meaningful about being part of this chapter in UNA's history. Founded in 1830, UNA is Alabama's first public four-year university. Davis, founded in 1912, is Alabama's oldest continually operating architecture firm.

Two institutions with deep roots in Alabama came together to create something entirely new.

Designed for the Experience

Throughout the design process, the goal extended beyond creating a venue for competition. Bank Independent Stadium needed to create an experience, one that felt connected to campus and distinctly UNA.

Saturday night, we got to see that experience firsthand.

We watched people move through the stadium, gather with friends, fill the stands, and celebrate together. We heard the Marching Pride. We felt the energy of the crowd. And we saw a space that existed for years in conversations, drawings, and renderings become a backdrop for real memories.

That's one of the most rewarding parts of what we do. Architecture creates the place. People give it life.

Congratulations to the University of North Alabama, UNA Athletics, and the many partners, supporters, and members of the community who helped bring Bank Independent Stadium to life.

We are incredibly proud to have played a role in creating a new home for the Lions and even more grateful that we were there to see the first chapter begin.
