Wilkerson Middle School
Birmingham City Schools
The new Wilkerson Middle School was a 1950s-style elementary school that needed to be completely upgraded for a middle school population of 450 students. Only the foundation and the exterior shell of the old school remain. Since Davis Architects turned it into a modern, flexible facility, Wilkerson students have met 100 percent of Alabama’s educational achievement goals each year since the renovations were finished. In 2008, they scored in the top fourth of all schools in the state on standardized tests.
Davis Architects’ designs included a competition gymnasium, cafeteria, media center, administrative offices, and the complete replacement of old classrooms with comfortable, high-tech facilities in keeping with the goals of the Birmingham Board of Education. Since then, Wilkerson has been named a “Model Middle School” by the International Center for Leadership in Education and designated as a “Torchbearer School” by the Alabama Department of Education.
Completed in the summer of 2006, the school continues to shine as one of the state’s remarkable successes. And the Birmingham Board of Education has engaged Davis Architects for other projects, including Oxmoor, a K-8 school, and Theo R. Wright Elementary, a K-5 school.
