Riverfront Park Visitor Center

Equal Justice Institute

Davis Architects served as the Architect for the Visitor Center at the Freedom Monument Sculpture Park, located along the Alabama River in Montgomery, Alabama. The park honors the legacy of more than 10 million Black Americans who endured enslavement in the United States. In close collaboration with the Equal Justice Initiative (EJI) and Olin, a nationally recognized landscape architecture firm, our team worked to ensure that the built environment supports the emotional depth, historical accuracy, and visual impact of the park’s sculptures and interpretive exhibits.

The Visitor Center was designed to welcome guests into the experience with dignity, clarity, and a strong narrative focus. It includes exhibition space, ticketing facilities, public restrooms, and a gathering area that introduces visitors to the historical context of the site. The building’s architectural language harmonizes with the surrounding landscape, while its form creates a guiding gesture—intuitively connecting the Visitor Center to the Freedom Monument Sculpture Park across the street. The result is a powerful and immersive environment that invites education, reflection, and a deeper understanding of the enduring legacy of slavery in America.
