In the South, football is more than a sport, it’s a tradition that unites families, communities, and generations of fans. Saturdays in the fall are marked by rituals and rivalries, with stadiums serving as the backdrop to unforgettable moments. For Davis Architects, designing these venues is more than adding seats or modernizing facilities; it’s about creating spaces that embody the culture of college football and elevate the experience for everyone who steps inside.
Expanding an Icon in Tuscaloosa
Few stadiums capture the spirit of college football like Saban Field at Bryant-Denny Stadium. Davis has been part of its evolution for decades, including the 2006 North End Zone and 2010 South End Zone expansions that added nearly 20,000 seats, premium clubs, skyboxes, and the Donor Hall of Recognition. The project introduced exclusive tailgating opportunities and new gathering spaces, transforming how fans and supporters experience game day. As former Athletics Director Mal Moore put it: “We built what Alabama needs and what the name Crimson Tide deserves.”

A Modern Game Day Experience
A decade later, the stadium underwent another major transformation. Partnering with HOK, Davis completed the 2020 renovation, which redefined Bryant-Denny once again. With Founder Suites, three new club areas, additional premium seating, loge boxes, and redesigned concourses, the updates were focused on the modern fan. Student spaces were improved, circulation was enhanced, and new audiovisual elements energized the pregame player entrance.

Stephanie Pope, Senior Vice President of Interior Design, summed it up best saying “Bryant-Denny’s legacy is bigger than football. Its very structure tells a story—spiral columns stretching deep underground and rising high above. Fans rarely see what’s beneath, but those hidden foundations reflect the same strong, lasting bond between the stadium, Tuscaloosa, and the people who bring it to life.”
The improvements extended beyond the walls of the stadium. The Walk of Champions became even more iconic, especially with the addition of Tuska—the beloved elephant statue relocated to campus in 2021. Today, it serves as a favorite spot for photos and a lasting symbol of Crimson Tide pride.

Building Community in Florence
Davis’ stadium expertise extends beyond Tuscaloosa. At the University of North Alabama, our firm is partnering with Mammoth Sports Construction and Ampere to bring a new stadium to life, one designed to reflect the pride of the Lions and the character of the Florence community. Planned features include a donor recognition walkway, an underground team tunnel, and gathering spaces that strengthen the bond between players and fans.
The design goes beyond athletics; it’s about creating a true community destination. Like Bryant-Denny, UNA’s Bank Independent Stadium will be a place where traditions are built, memories are made, and fans come together season after season.

More Than Concrete and Steel
Football stadiums in the South are cultural landmarks. They represent more than athletics; they tell the story of a community’s pride, passion, and traditions. Whether it’s expanding one of the most iconic stadiums in the country or shaping the future home of a growing program, Davis is proud to design spaces that capture the energy of game day and bring fans closer to the sport they love.

As Courtney Pittman, President of Davis Architects, reflects on this exciting season, she says her “favorite part about having a hand in these projects is attending the opening game and seeing firsthand just how much our hard work affects the fan experience.” So, as another football season kicks off, we’re reminded that stadiums aren’t just places to watch a game, they’re places to experience it.
