The existing three-level 310,000 SF O’Connell Center provided only limited space for its acclaimed gymnastics team’s training facility. Situated adjacent to the arena below a tensile structure roof, the existing space posed a number of challenges with regard to code issues, structural systems, and equipment needs. An 18,000 SF expansion and renovation provide all the space needed to create a state-of-the-art facility with proper equipment clearances, coaches’ offices with views to the training areas, a training room, and storage areas. Graphics enliven the space, and new mechanical systems provide better thermal comfort for athletes. The facility also implemented numerous sustainable initiatives in the design and construction, earning it a LEED Gold rating.
