Rickwood Field

Birmingham, Alabama
Friends of Rickwood

Since its opening day in 1910, Rickwood Field has witnessed a succession of baseball greats – including Ty Cobb, Babe Ruth, Dizzy Dean, Satchell Page and Willie Mays (who grew up a few blocks away). Davis Architects has been involved with Rickwood since the 1920s, when its predecessor firm – Denham, VanKeuren & Denham – designed a steel-framed roof to cover the infield bleachers. Now the firm works with the Friends of Rickwood, which has invested more than $2 million in refurbishing the grandstands, press box, locker rooms, main entrance and roof of the old ballpark. Davis also has developed a master plan for the future, including plans for a Museum of Southern Baseball and new landscaping.
